This absolutely made my year. I had just moved. I was looking for something to make me excited about the Midwest (sorry), and I found this: BACONFEST!!!
I have a deep and abiding love of bacon (who doesn’t), so much so it has it’s own Pinterest board. So for those of you that don’t imbibe the swine…YOU ARE SO MISSING OUT! (I am talking to you Hungry Traveler). I found out about this event from a random search for things to do in the Midwest, and you would have thought I won the lottery (because I kind of did).
Within 1 hour of tickets being released the event was sold out! I was pretty much broke, but was going to make this happen. My friend, RZ and I planned a really short trip; we stayed 1 night in Chicago. Just to put this in perspective, it is a near 6 hour drive from Columbus to Chicago. We drove to Chicago, gorged ourselves at Baconfest, had the worst I’tis on record, and returned to Columbus the very next day. We saw nothing of Chicago; it was the best trip ever!
It was held at the UIC Forum, which had the feel of a convention center. The room was huge and there were rows and rows of bacony goodness.
A few lessons:
1. Bring Tupperware – you will not be able to taste everything, but you will want to.
2. We had a 2 bite rule, big mistake. You can taste way more if you only take 1 bite of everything you try, even the good stuff.
3. Just like at Thanksgiving, wear stretchy pants. We wore jeans and were hurting when we were done tasting.
4. Walk the whole floor before you start tasting. We missed 2 whole rows because we were stuffed and I missed out on trying the donut with bacon bourbon glaze.
I didn’t try any of the below confections either because I quite simply couldn’t take another bite.
All in all an amazing time! What’s tempting you?
